Montana Bowhunting and Technology - Your Choice Your Future Video at bottom of text
Traditional Bowhunters of Montana represents many of our state's leaders in archery hunting, and helps connect hunters all over the state with a unique tradition that emphasizes the finest ideals of woodsmanship and wildlife conservation. We produced this video because we believe bowhunters, legislators, and policy makers need to understand the threats that rapid advances in the technological sophistication of archery equipment pose to the future of archery hunting in Montana. Our archery seasons are among the most generous in the United States, reflecting Montana’s tremendous success in game management to date. Thanks to our long seasons, 40,000 bowhunters buy licenses in Montana every year, coming home from the field with an average success rate of about 12%. Advanced equipment, primarily in the form of compound bows with targeting optics and high let-off rates, has already contributed to increased success rates in recent decades. We believe that new archery technologies will continue to increase success rates. You might ask, what's wrong with that? Doesn't everyone want to notch their archery tag? Of course we all want to come home from the field with a story of a successful hunt, but with 40,000 archery hunters annually, and weapons that vastly exceed the power and accuracy of even first-generation compound bows, we can't afford to see too much success. If new technologies enable too many archery hunters to notch their tags, we'll get to the point where it will be necessary to reduce hunter opportunity and hunter numbers in order to adequately protect and manage our game herds. Reducing hunter numbers and hunter opportunities would lead to decreased revenue from bowhunters in rural Montana communities. That would mean less money in grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and motels, in the very places where business owners need it most. To keep the best of what we have now, in both hunting opportunity and small town economies, Traditional Bowhunters of Montana believes it is imperative to prevent the legalization of new bowhunting technologies.
